PDL qualifying scenarios - After Friday's games
17 clubs vie for seven Open Cup spots this weekend

PDL U.S. Open Cup qualifying is entering it’s final three days, and since our last look at the qualifying scenarios at the beginning of the week, many clubs have fallen to the wayside. 17 clubs still remain to try to stake a claim to one of the seven remaining PDL U.S. Open Cup berths. USOpenCup.com takes a revised look at all of the conference races, and who needs to do what in order to get in.

Eastern Conference

The race for the two Eastern Conference Open cup spots is down to four teams. The Cape Cod Crusaders have finished their qualifying run, and sit with 9 points and a 3-1-0 record. Also at the top of the standings are the Fredericksburg Gunners, who hold their fate in their own hands, as a win over Rhode Island on Sunday will lock up an Open Cup berth. The two clubs chasing Cape Cod and Fredericksburg are the Brooklyn Knights and New Hampshire Phantoms. The Knights have a 2-0-0 record, and play back to back road games against Vermont (tonight) and New Hampshire (Sunday). A win in Vermont will leave Brooklyn needing only a draw with New Hampshire to get in. The Phantoms have the simpler route. Win versus Brooklyn, and they will make their first Open Cup appearance as a PDL club, having made three previous appearances as a member of the USL Second Division.

Central Conference

The Central Conference is still wide open, as six teams all have six points. Three of those teams only have one match remaining, while the rest have two yet to play. Two of the single match teams, Des Moines and Colorado, will face off tonight in what is essentially an elimination match. The winner will finish with nine points, and hope the other results go their way to keep them in the top two. A draw will likely eliminate both teams. The other club with one match remaining is the Chicago Fire, and by the time they take the field at West Michigan on Memorial Day, they should have a better idea of where they stand. The three remaining clubs all sit at 2-0-0, and play the first of their two remaining matches tonight. Cleveland travel to West Virginia, Michigan hosts Ft. Wayne, and St. Louis plays at home versus pointless Springfield. On Sunday, the Lions will travel across the Show Me State to face the Kansas City Brass. The Memorial Day showdown between Michigan and Cleveland could turn out to be for the final Open Cup berth in the conference.

Southern Conference

With a 1-0 win over Laredo on Friday night, the Austin Aztex have put themselves in prime position to qualify for their first U.S. Open Cup tournament. The only team in their way is Mississippi Brilla, who must walk a thin tightrope to pass Austin in the standings. Mississippi not only have to win their two games this weekend (away to Houston tonight, and away to DFW Tornadoes on Sunday), they have to either win each game by three goals, or have a combined goal difference of +5 for the two matches, while scoring at least three goals in one game, and two in the other. PDL tiebreakers dictate that only +/- 3 goals be counted towards goal difference and goals scored, due to the unbalanced nature of the qualifying schedules.

In the Southeast Division, the scenario is much simpler. A Central Florida win or draw at Bradenton on Memorial Day, the Kraze are in. Bradenton wins, and the Academics are in. Short and sweet, simple and neat.

Western Conference
Those Northwest Division teams sure love their drama when it comes to the Open Cup. Just two years ago, BYU and Ogden qualified on the final night through a bizarre string of results. This year, three teams will vie for the Northwest Division Open Cup berth on the final night of play. Yakima are in the driver’s seat and have the simplest route, defeat Ogden and they are in. Should they draw with Ogden, then they will need a draw in the BYU-Tacoma game to advance, or else the winner will move on to the Open Cup. Should BYU and Tacoma draw and Yakima lose, Yakima will still move on, as the head to head tiebreaker will not apply (all teams have not played each other), and BYU and Tacoma will not improve their goal difference to catch Yakima. While Ogden can force a four way tie with a win over Yakima and a BYU-Tacoma draw, Ogden would not be able to equal or surpass Tacoma in goals scored, as only -/+ 3 goals are counted towards for tiebreaker purposes. Get all that?
