Meet the USASA: Aegean Hawks
A winning team that pays its dues...literally
A majority of the USASA clubs that advance to the U.S. Open Cup have some sort of backing behind them. Some are in the form of a professional-type organization, such as the NPSL clubs, while others are backed by ethnic clubs, or have a club structure set up. Washington D.C.’s Aegean Hawks are a different animal: a team in which the players themselves pay the cost of keeping their team on the field.

Meet the USASA: Azzurri
Dallas club making 3rd appearance in the last 4 years
Azzurri are celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, and what better way to mark the occasion than to make a run at the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Founded in 1982 by the
Italian Club of Dallas, Azzurri qualified out of Region III for the third time in the last four years. The club currently has four teams and has enjoyed a great deal of success in recent years. Last year they won the National Amateur Cup, and to go along with the Over-30 national championship in 2003 and 2005. Azzurri also boasts having won more state championships than any other club from North Texas.

Meet the USASA: Banat Arsenal
Not bad for a team "taking a year off"

Meet The USASA: Bavarian SC
Milwaukee club is the only one to advance to 2nd round
The Bavarian Soccer Club is participating in the U.S. Open Cup for the fifth time in the last nine years as a result of defeating Lafayette Veracruz (Indiana) 4-1 and Ann Arbor FC Elite (Michigan) 6-0 in Region II USASA qualifying. In the first round, they upset the Cincinnati Kings of USL Second Division 1-0 on June 12th on a goal from Steve Sperl.

Bavarian SC started as a football club in 1929 and has had much success in local football, winning state titles in all decades (including seven in a row from 1960 to 1966) and four National Amateur Cup championships. The first came in 1976, and then three straight from 2001 to 2003. In 2003, they won the double by also capturing the National Amateur Open Cup, a feat that had not been done since Kutis FC pulled it off in 1957.

Meet the USASA: El Paso Indios USA
An amateur team with ties across the border
The recent trend of foreign clubs fielding teams in the lower division leagues in the United States is evidenced in this year’s U.S. Open Cup. Of the four clubs in this year’s tournament affiliated with foreign clubs, three are professional (CD Chivas USA, California Victory and Crystal Palace Baltimore). The fourth is El Paso Indios USA, an amateur club from the NPSL, who are affiliated with Indios de Ciudad Juarez of the Mexican Primera División A (second division).

Meet the USASA: Lynch's Irish Pub
Florida club changes name, returns to the Open Cup

Lynch’s Irish Pub FC is the third team from this year’s USASA field to have previous experience in the Open Cup, along with RWB Adria and Bavarian SC. Don’t recognize the name? That’s because when we last saw the team in the Cup, they were known as DS United. The club was founded in 1999, and began play in Jacksonville’s Beaches Adult Soccer League. In 2004, the team decided to take the name of one of their sponsors, although a team was still fielded under the name DS United. In fact, the two clubs actually met in group play in 2006 Region III qualifying, with Lynch’s prevailing 4-3. Lynch’s has won the Jacksonville’s Beaches Adult Soccer League title six times.

Meet the USASA: RWB Adria
Chicago club mix of ethnic and U.S. players, young and old
RWB Adria is a soccer club with a rich history - the Chicago club is believed to have won the most trophies of any team in Illinois since its inception in 1959, and its alumni include a host of professional players, including Portuguese legend Eusebio.

"It was just after he stopped playing in the NASL," RWB Adria coach Minos Vlamakis said. "In our clubhouse, we’ve got a nice team picture with him. It’s our little bitty claim to fame."

So when RWB Adria takes on the Carolina RailHawks of the USL First Division in a first-round match of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night in Cary, N.C., the Croatian club will be looking to add to its history.
