1:06 - SEATTLE MOVES ON! 6-5 in PKs...and you have to say that while he fell JUST short of winning the player of the round for Round 3....that Chris Eylander has to be the favorite for the quarterfinal honor. 13 saves, plus two stops in the PK shootout. Impressive. I would say a fair result. Seattle was the better team overall, but KC did have their moments.

For the first time since 1999, we will have a non-MLS team in the Open Cup Final.

U.S. Open Cup Semifinals
August 12, 2008

New England Revolution (MLS) at D.C. United (MLS)
RFK Stadium; Washington, D.C. - 7:30 PM

Seattle Sounders (USL-1) at Charleston Battery (USL-1)
Blackbaud Stadium; Charleston, S.C. - 7:30 PM

1:01 - JUST in time for the penalty kicks in the Seattle game to finish up....the site is back up. Now, first of all...the SITE didn’t crash...but our access to UPDATE the site wasn’t working. What a great night of soccer.

[The site was down from 10:30 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. - the website was viewable, but we were unable to update it]

10:29 - Seattle puts the ball in the back of the net...but it was offside. KC nearly scores on the other end, but shot it just wide of the post.

10:27 - Seattle nearly struck first, Andre Schmid had the keeper to beat, but sent it wide right.

10:21 - What a shocking turnaround in Dallas...(well, Frisco...you know what I mean) They are at halftime now. 2-0 Battery. Seattle and KC just kicked off.

10:18 - We’ve been so wrapped up in the other games that I forgot that Seattle and Kansas City are almsot ready to kick things off.

10:16 - Alvarez for FCD hits the post, NEARLY ties it up...and less than a minute later...Charleston’s Ian Fuller scores on the other end to put Charleston up 2-0!! WHAT A SEQUENCE!

10:15 - DC United post game show is on...FC Dallas/Charleston is back underway

10:08 - FINAL WHISTLE! DC escapes with a 2-1 win over Chicago. "Not a pretty victory" says our PBP guy.

10:06 - As the final minutes tick away (stoppage time!) in Maryland (DC leading 2-1) - I just received word that FC Dallas and Charleston are going to get back underway a little after 10:00 (which is now-ish). Players are on the field warming up.

10:02 - Legs are failing some players...is DC going to squeak this out?

9:52 - If you’re not listening to the DC broadcast, this guy does a nice job, but reminds me of the micro machine commercial guy sometimes. :)

Some near misses in extra time.

Rolfe crosses into the box and cleared away by the DC defense.

9:51 - Tim in Chicago just reminded me that Blanco came in as a sub in the Cleveland game. Thanks Tim!

9:49 - As we prepare for the 2nd overtime period at the Maryland Soccerplex....I want to thank Scott Viar for blogging for the first couple hours tonight. Josh Hakala here, and it’s been a pretty exciting night. FC Dallas and Charleston are in a weather delay after lightning was sighted in the 41st minute. New England escapes on penalty kicks, and things are chippy, in typical DC/CHI form, between United and the Fire...

We’re UNDERWAY....Carr forces a tough save by Zach Wells in the opening seconds of the second overtime period

9:47 - 18 minutes in...Blanco gets a red card in his first U.S. Open Cup appearance. Namoff headed home a corner kick from Moreno...that’s the difference in this one.

9:45 - Craziness in Maryland tonight. DC and Chicago are battling in extra time. Blanco kicked the ball at someone...Burch shoved Blanco....Fred got a yellow card...and now we’re back underway in the 105th. RED CARD FOR BLANCO AND BURCH!!

9:33 - Bryan Namoff has given United the lead 2-1 off a Jaime Moreno corner kick.

8:37 - The second 45 is underway between Chicago and DC.

8:33 - Val Teixeira is booked for Crystal Palace Baltimore.

8:30 - Twellman scuffs a shot in close on a pass from Mansally. So many wasted chances for New England.

8:28 - Chris Tierney drifts in and nearly puts the Revs ahead.

8:21 - Halftime in Germantown, with the Fire ahead 1-0.

8:14 - Chase Hilgenbrinck goes into the book for the Revs.

8:12 - Near-misses by Chris Rolfe for the Fire and Taylor Twellman for New England. Rolfe nearly chipped Zach Wells who was on a walkabout, while Twellman headed just over the bar.

8:09 - GOAL! Daniel Woolard opens the scoring for the Fire on a pass from Logan Pause. CHI 1:0 DCU.

8:08 - Starting lineup for FC Dallas is strong. The 2007 finalists are planning to bring their A-game tonight in front of the home fans.

8:05 - Pat Phelan and Brian Rowland collide in the box. Both are a little shaken up. Rowland is still down.

8:01 - Second half underway for the defending champions and their USL-2 opponents.

7:51 - Both Chicago and DC have put out somewhat-representative sides tonight, with just a couple of first-choice players for each sides not in the first XIs (Blanco for the Fire and Moreno for United being the main ones).

7:47 - Crystal Palace Baltimore and New England have gone to the break at ones.

7:40 - Brian Rowland and Matt Nelson have split time in net for Crystal Palace Baltimore, with each picking up wins thus far this season in the US Open Cup (Rowland backstopped Palace against the LA Legends in the first round, while Nelson was in net for the second and third-round matches).

7:39 - Smith forces a save from Rowland on a hard left-footed shot.

7:37 - DC United and Chicago are underway.

7:34 - Mansally is called offside.

7:32 - Yellow card for Amaechi Igwe of New England on a foul against Brooks. Brooks stays down and ends up being carried from the field.

7:28 - Mansally puts a shot over the crossbar from close range.

7:20 - GOAL! Dan Lader makes it 1-1 in the 20th minute. Could the choice of putting out a second-string side place New England at danger of elimination tonight?

7:14 - Here’s a shot 7 minutes from kickoff tonight at Veterans Stadium in New Britain, CT. Maybe the fans are like LA Dodger fans and they won’t show up until the 25th minute?

7:13 - Gary Brooks nearly levels the match with a shot that gets behind Warren but is cleared off the line.

7:12 - Mbuta forces a reflex save from Warren just seconds after the Twellman attempt.

7:11 - Twellman just misses a header that would have put the Revs up 2-0.

7:05 - GOAL! Kenny Mansally opens the scoring for New England in the sixth minute off a lead pass out of midfield by Brandon Tyler. NE 1:0 CPB

7:14 - Here’s a shot 7 minutes from kickoff tonight at Veterans Stadium in New Britain, CT. Maybe the fans are like LA Dodger fans and they won’t show up until the 25th minute?

7:00 - Kickoff in New Britain between the Revolution and Crystal Palace.

Welcome to the quarterfinal edition of the U.S. Open Cup blog...we’ll have everything up and running momentarily.

New England and Crystal Palace Baltimore are set to kick things off soon....weather is much better 80s, windy and overcast with a smaller crowd than last week (according to our friend Sean Donahue of the Revolution Recap radio show)

Here are the lineups:
NER: Warren, Hilgenbrinck, Igwe, Valentino, Brill, Tierney, Phelan, Tyler, Smith, Mansally, Twellman
CPB: Rowland, Harada, Marshall, Lookingland, Robson, Mark, Healey, Lader, Harkin, Mbuta, Brooks

New England’s lineup is what we around the office have affectionately referred to as "Taylor Twellman and the Pub team" -- they had enough to knock off Richmond last round, can they do it again vs. Palace?
