12:14 - Thanks so much for following tonight’s action. We will be here again next Tuesday for the quarterfinals. Thanks to everyone who emailed, and of course, everyone who helped us keep track of all these games tonight. I’m Josh Hakala...good night everyone. (EMAIL: media-AT-usopencup.com if you have any questions/comments)
12:11 - FINAL SCORE: Seattle wins 2-0. Chris Eylander with the shutout. Sounders eliminate Chivas USA for the second year in a row. Even worse, this is the third year in a row that Chivas USA has been eliminated by a lower division team (2006 - Dallas Roma FC, USASA... 2007 & 08 - Seattle Sounders) Taylor Graham and Sebastien Le Toux are the goalscorers.
Seattle will host Kansas City in the quarterfinals.
Here’s the quarterfinal matchups:
Crystal Palace Baltimore (USL-2) at New England Revolution (MLS) Veterans Stadium, Willow Brook Park; New Britain, Conn. 7:00 PM
Chicago Fire (MLS) at DC United (MLS) Maryland SoccerPlex; Boyds, Md. 7:30 p.m.
Charleston Battery (USL-1) at FC Dallas (MLS) Pizza Hut Park; Frisco, Texas 8:30 PM Broadcast: Video (FC Dallas)
Kansas City Wizards (MLS) at Seattle Sounders (USL-1) Qwest Field; Seattle, Wash. 10:00 PM
CONGRATS to Crystal Palace Baltimore as they win the $10,000 USL Second Division prize money as they USL-2 team that advanced the furthest in the tournament. Charleston and Seattle are still alive for the USL-1 prize money.
12:09 - Another quick counter, Le Toux is in on goal...fires it just wide right. He is rewarded with a standing ovation as he exits the game for some fresh legs for the final minute or so.
12:08 - Le Toux hits the post...NEARLY made it 3-0. Eylander with a diving save to his left on a late push by Chivas USA. 4 mins. of stoppage time.
12:05 - Seattle is trying to hold on while Chivas USA continue to push forward.
11:57 - Disaster for Chivas USA...Seattle scores thanks to some hustle by Sebastien Le Toux. A long ball takes a bounce near the edge of the box, Chivas defender Jim Curtin is unable to clear...Guzan comes off his line to clean it up, but Le Toux gets to the ball first and chips it over him and into the back of the net. 2-0 Seattle.
11:48 - Both teams battling, Seattle’s got six defenders out there. I wouldn’t say that they’re packing it in, but they’re definitely going to make Chivas USA work for that equalizer.
11:29 - Travis is following the U.S. Open Cup all the way from Australia (where it’s already Wednesday). He’s thrilled about DC United winning earlier over Rochester.
Big save by Chris Eylander (rocking his hat to try to shield the setting sun)..keeping Seattle in front 1-0
11:23 - Sounders/Chivas USA are back underway in the 2nd half...can Seattle hold on for an upset for the second year in a row?
11:15 - Any questions/comments...email us at media-AT-usopencup.com (or trusty email form mysteriously disappeared during our little technical difficulty earlier, so you’ll just have to contribute the old fashioned way... be sure to include your name and location and your favorite club)
11:14 - Halftime, Seattle leads Chivas USA 1-0.
11:00 - More emails... Brian from State College, PA...he has some suggestions on how to "fix" the Open Cup, but apparently is teasing us, since he didn’t disclose any details.
Matt from NYC also following the Red Bulls...Jonathan from the Forever Orange blog dropped in to say hello and provide us with some details from the game...Mark from Phoenix was curious to know if Blackbaud in Blackbaud Stadium was a software company...and we BELIEVE it is the same company (but we’re not 100% sure)....Mark in New Jersey helped us clear up that crazy yellow card flurry during the Red Bulls match....Dan from Oneonta, NY (home of the Hall of Fame) was listening to the Rhinos/DC game and wondered about the possibility of the Open Cup acquiring a major sponsor and having the tournament become a little more financially attractive (we hope so!)....Bryan from Pembroke, NH also passed along some info from the Red Bulls game...Mikey from Richmond was following the game vs. New England...our good friend Beau Dure was following the evening’s action as well....Kyle from High Point, NC thanks us for the coverage (thank YOU!)...and finally...TOM who is staying up all night to follow the action from ENGLAND!!! Tom is a Cambridge United / Seattle Sounders fan.
10:55 - Le Toux was in on goal, but a huge save by Brad Guzan (Yes, Guzan is in goal for Chivas...)...on the ensuing corner kick, Gardner bends it in and Taylor Graham heads it in to put Seattle up 1-0.
Sorry for the delay...got some emails to get to.
Michael from NYC was following his Red Bulls...unfortunate result for him tonight.
10:44 - Very competitive match between Seattle & Chivas USA so far. Here’s the quarterfinal matchups as of right now: Crystal Palace Baltimore at New England Revolution Veterans Stadium, Willow Brook Park; New Britain, Conn. 7 p.m. ----------------- Kansas City Wizards at Seattle Sounders Qwest Field; Seattle, Wash. 7 p.m. or Kansas City Wizards at Chivas USA Home Depot Center; Carson, Calif. 7:30 p.m. ----------------- Chicago Fire at DC United Maryland SoccerPlex; Boyds, Md. 7:30 p.m. ----------------- Charleston Battery at FC Dallas Pizza Hut Park; Frisco, Texas 7:30 p.m. Broadcast: Video (FC Dallas)
10:36 - The Revs take care of business, and defeat Richmond 3-0. Glad the weather managed to cooperate, since the quarterfinals are next Tuesday, there isn’t much room for a make-up game, so that would have done a number on the schedule. Mansally gets pretty banged up in a hard tackle as the game ends.
10:31 - Abe Thompson scores the go-ahead goal on an assist by Drew Moor in 2nd half stoppage time. The whistle blows...so that goal was definitely in the dying seconds. Thompson headed it in for the game-winner. First win for FCD coach Schellas Hyndman. Congrats to him.
10:29 - With all the craziness going on...Seattle/Chivas USA is underway out west (on USLLive.com). Meanwhile, New England are in cruise control in Connecticut, and Miami and FCD are in 2nd half stoppage time. Saunders just made a huge save for Miami to keep it 1-1.
10:20 - While everyone was focused on the Charleston game....the Revs have blown the game open in Connecticut. Joe Germanese (Chase Hilgenbrinck) in the 63rd minute and then Taylor Twellman (Chris Tierney) in the 67th. Twellman then was subbed out shortly after scoring.
Any hopes of a comeback at Toyota Park were dashed with a 4th goal by Chicago’s Mike Banner (his 2nd of the night), and they win it 4-1.
A red card was shown late in the FC Dallas/Miami game....someone in the sideline was shown it...Sean Cameron (MIA) is shown the door.
10:18 - PKs in Charleston...Revs are pouring it on 3-0. Charleston wins 4-3 on PKs!

10:10 - Charleston/Houston are going to PKs....things get ugly at the end of the Carolina/Kansas City game. A fight breaks out, pushing and shoving a couple players sent off. An unfortunate way to end an exciting match.
10:05 - Penalty kick for Kansas City...they win it 4-2. Carolina was pressuring and had a couple chances at the end, but KC caught them on the counter attack and the goalkeeper had to take the player down on the breakaway.
Cleveland pulls one back vs. Chicago... Kiel McClung (Adam Ruud) in the 61st minute.
Houston and Charleston seem like they’re going to PKs....but I’ve said that before..
10:00 - Carolina pushing for an equalizer...and I have to imagine that the Battery are just holding on for dear life down two men. Some exciting action....and BOTH games are on USL LIVE -- check ’em out!
9:54 - Revs up 1-0 after a goal by Sam Brill on a corner kick by Chris Tierney.... Ryan Solle sent off for Carolina after his second yellow card. Down to 10 men, and the RailHawks are down 3-2 to KC.
9:49 - Developments in Charleston....Marco Reda (CHS) receives his second yellow card in the 103rd minute and the Battery are down to NINE men. (City Stars nearly connect on a dangerous free kick.)
9:45 - Not much action in a rain-soaked Connecticut (NER/RIC)...HOU/CHS and CAR/KCW are battling in extra time. Chicago and Cleveland are underway in the second half, the Fire have made a few changes and are looking to ride out the second half.
9:37 - Just like that Kansas City jumps in front in the 1st period of extra time. Ivan Trujillo puts the Wiz in front 3-2 in the 93rd minute.
9:29 - Ok, our email form seems to have disappeared (???? might have been the cause of the earlier problem???) -- if you would like to send us email with your questions/comments -- send it to: media-AT-usopencup.com.
FINAL in Maryland... DC United, with two unassisted goals from Marc Burch, defeat Rochester 2-0.
Kansas City and Carolina ...and Charleston and Houston are headed to 30 mins. of extra time -- KC/CAR are tied 2-2, Lopez converts a late PK to save the Wizards in Cary, NC.
The Red Bulls look like their going to be eliminated.... Mike Magee sent off in the final minute, and Palace is still up 2-0.
Abe Thompson from Dominic Oduro for the FCD equalizer.
New England and Richmond are scoreless...with lots of sloppy action. A couple instances of a ball coming to rest in a puddle.
9:27 - FCD pull level in 1st half stoppage time... 1-1 vs. Miami FC.
9:25 - We’re 9:23 - Fire/City Stars are at halftime....it’s all Fire, 3-0.
Stoppage time in Carolina....2-2 ...
9:21 - Houston tries to hold off the Battery, but the DYNAMO TIE IT UP in the 89th minute! Stephen Wondolowski scores the equalizer.
9:16 - By the way, Ives had it right...it was Andrew Marshall who scored for Crystal Palace, Brian Harkin had the assist. (We never should have doubted him)
Another goal by Marc Burch ...DC leads 2-0.
Gary Brooks puts Crystal Palace up 2-0 (DOWN A MAN!)...
9:15 - Lopez converts a penalty kick to tie it up at 2-2 in Carolina.
Wondolowski is back up and running for Houston....Dynamo are up a man, but down 1-0 (as are the Red Bulls).
9:07 - Ok...thanks to the folks at Demosphere for fixing the website. Had some technical difficulties.
NER/RIC are underway....scoreless with wet field conditions (to say the least)
Charleston still lead 1-0 vs. Houston ...Nelson Akwari was just shown a red card for Charleston, so the Battery will have to play with 10 men for the remainder. Wondolowski is down as a result of the foul
DC United just scored thanks to Marc Burch, an unassisted goal in the 78th minute...DCU leads 1-0 at the Maryland Soccerplex.
Crystal Palace Baltimore are down a man (Kante shown red), but are leading 1-0.
RailHawks have an upset in mind, leading the Wizards 2-1
It’s been ALL Chicago Fire in the early going, goals by Mike Banner and Calen Carr ...and a PK by Chad Barrett (foul drawn by Chris Rolfe). The folks doing the Cleveland video broadcast (both the guy behind the mic, and the guy in the background) are pretty frustrated with how things are going.
Afonso took things into his own hands, dribbling right down the middle, past Aaron Pitchkolan, and firing a shot past FCD keeper Ray Burse...Miami FC lead 1-0.
9:05 - I think we’re ok to go...TONS to update you on...be patient.

8:41 - Sorry folks, we’re having some technical problems. Hopefully we’ll have this sorted out ASAP.
8:22 - OK...tons to update (chasing 1-year old son around, combined with some technical difficulties)
Brian Shea informed me that The CPB-NY ref is Andrew Chapin. That other ref was Niko Bratsis
Another former Revolution player, Ibrahim Kante (CPB) gets a RED CARD for a tackle on Megaloudis (NYRB)
Santiago Fusulier breaks the scoreless tie with a goal for the Carolina RailHawks ...’Hawks lead 1-0. Ryan Solle (ANOTHER former Rev...do you sense a theme?)
HALFTIME STATS from CAROLINA: Free Kicks: CAR leads 5-3, Fouls: KC leads 5-2, Corners: CAR leads 2-1, Shots: CAR leads 6-5, Saves: Tied 3-3,
8:16 - OK, apparently my matchtracker got a little messed up....FIVE yellow cards issued in NYR/CPB.
BAL - Larry Mark (caution; Reckless Foul) 21 BAL - Bryan Harkin (caution; Dissent) 26 NY - Mike Magee (caution; Dissent) 26 BAL - Gary Brooks (caution; Dissent) 30 BAL - Ibrahim Kante (caution; Dissent) 30
8:14 - "Dizzy" Dan Antoniuk hits the post for Carolina, KCW clear it.
8:12 - I don’t know if this is the same ref from the Richmond/Western Mass 2nd Round game, but there have been EIGHT yellow cards issued in the first 30 minutes of the New York/CPB game (is that matchtracker correct?) Matchtracker lists DISSENT as the reason for four of them. Trying to sort this out.
8:11 - As always, we welcome your questions/comments through our email form, and we’ll try to answer those questions during tonight’s blog.
8:09 - CORRECTION: Osvaldo Alonso had the assist on the Ian Fuller goal.
8:08 - Pressure from Charlestonpays off.... Former New England Revolution player Ian Fuller scores on a header off a Lazo Alavanja free kick. CHARLESTON LEADS HOUSTON 1-0 (at least they didn’t wait until extra time to open the scoring, like last year)
8:05 - (*Rock N Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution* - AC/DC returns for the New England Revolution Open Cup soundtrack) -- still delayed....Brad is back, and he says the game is scheduled to kickoff at 8:30 p.m. He’s impressed with the way the field is holding up (from where he’s sitting, anyway)
8:01 - The first goal of the night: Bryan Harkin, assisted by Andrew Marshall in the 17th minute...CPB up 1-0 on the Red Bulls. Goal came off a corner kick...headed in by Harkin. His first of the tournament.
Charlestonis already on the attack in the opening minute of play vs. Houston.
7:31 - Brad Feldman is back on....and there is MORE lightning in the area. Warm ups were cut short and the players have been sent back into the locker room. Looks like more tunes in store for us....
7:29 - Someone’s playing with their ipod on the song selection for the NER/RIC delay soundtrack...should be kicking off soon.... Also, there are also text updates for the Charleston/Houston game available at http://www.forever-orange.com
7:24 - I’ve just been informed (I added it above) that 790AM The Sports Animal is doing a broadcast of tonight’s Charleston/Houston game. (Broadcasting NOW!)
Just in case you were keeping score at home: New England’s starting lineup: (excluding Twellman & Mansally who have 11GP/10GS for Mansally & 2 GP for Twellman) 17 games played and 9 games started (league play).
New Yorkseems like they want to change their poor Open Cup history...they’re fielding a strong side.
7:13 - As we get ready for NER/RIC...the lineups are up on the MLSnet.com matchtracker (see link above) and the Revolution are known for not fielding "top notch" lineups in the Open Cup...but this is a CLEARLY a second string lineup. Taylor Twellman is in the starting lineup, along with Kenny Mansally (10 starts), but the rest of the team are not regular starters.
7:07 - Teams are on the field in New Britain, CT warming up -- things sound promising (I don’t believe in jinxing) -- And while we’re waiting...a fun fact to pass along: For fans wondering if the interest in the Open Cup is increasing...we just wanted to let you know that this past month SHATTERED our website traffic record for a month. Thank you to everyone who continues to check out the site.
7:01 - Welcome to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup -- plenty of games to choose from tonight and plenty of ways to follow along. Right now, the Revs and the Kickers are kicking things off momentarily, with the online radio broadcast available at www.revolutionsoccer.net.
There’s apparently a "downpour" according to Brad Feldman -- and there’s a DELAY! (booo!) So I guess they’re not kicking things off after all. Currently playing AC/DC to keep us entertained during the delay -- (gotta love "Thunderstruck") -- We’ll keep you posted.
